Humidifiers work on the basis of a large surface area saturated with moisture over which a stream of air is blown.

The air crossing the saturated surface causes the water to evaporate into the surrounding air and raise the humidity level.

Most units have an humidistat that switches the unit on or off at the desired level of humidity.
