They work by flowing water across an evaporative media which has a very large surface area.
Air is drawn across this media causing the water to evaporate.
Heat out of the surrounding air is used to cause the water to evaporate so the air returned to the room is cooler.
Evaporative coolers should only be used in well ventilated areas such as retail premises.
By there nature evaporative coolers create moisture in the room and therefore should not be used in computer rooms, or any other area which is not well ventilated or contains equipment that might be moisture sensitive .
